Commonly Ask Questions

These are the most commonly asked questions individuals have before attending a meeting. By attending one of our meetings, our senior staff will be glad to answer any additional questions you may have.

Do I need to have previous experience?

No prior experience in Search & Rescue is necessary. SETSAR offers its members both online and in-person training at no charge. Some of the online training programs are provided through FEMA and other government agencies.

How much time do I need to commit to be a member?

Team members to attend a minimum of five non-deployment meetings and/or training exercises per year. There is currently no minimum requirement for callouts, and we understand that, depending on the day, time, and location, you may not be able to participate. However, we hope that all team members will be able to respond when our services are requested.

What does it cost to become a member?

Currently there is no membership fee; however, members are responsible for purchasing their own gear. Gear costs can vary; on average members spend $175 to $340. However, you likely already have most of the necessary gear, or you can purchase it gradually over time.

Is there a physical fitness test?

Yes. Ground search and specialized teams are required to complete a fitness test every six months. The test is not difficult; ground search members must be able to walk 1 mile in 20 minutes carrying 5 pounds of gear.

Specialized teams must be able to walk 2 miles in 40 minutes carrying 20 pounds of gear. Positions like drone operations, communications, public relations, logistics, and ground support currently do not require members to take a fitness test; however, all members need to be in good health.

Are there other positions besides ground operations?

Yes. Drone operations, incident command, communication, logistics support are available for those individuals who do not want to enter the woods looking for a lost child, rescuing an individual stuck on a cliff, or searching for victims after a tornado or hurricane.

How long does the process take?

After we receive and review your new member application, you'll be invited to attend one of our meetings, where you'll have the opportunity to meet other team members and senior staff. We currently hold our meetings on the third Thursday of every month at a location in The Woodlands, Texas.
